You asked for it, here it is! By popular demand from the local community, dancer and internationally-acclaimed violinist Mari Black has designed a special “Not Another Musicality” workshop that will focus on one specific layer of musical expression: Phrasing! More than any other musical element, phrasing will inject your dance with flow, breath, and direction. Understanding what, where, and how to phrase will help you maximize your expressive options and connect deeply with your musical partners. In this interactive workshop, we will use favorite Golden Age tango songs to explore what a phrase is, how to recognize it by ear in the music, and even how to predict what phrase structures musicians will follow through the song. With the help of live musicians, we will play with the different ways we can phrase a single song, producing different expressive effects. You’ll leave with your ears better tuned to the musical lines and have lots of new ideas for how to practice hearing, creating, and dancing phrases.

As always, this session builds on the material covered at previous NAM workshops, but is still easily accessible to newcomers. This class is for novice through advanced dancers and/or musicians. All are welcome, and all will come away with fresh ideas, hearing things they never heard before in the music!

About Mari Black....

Mari Black specializes in bridging the gap between dancers and musicians. Her classes at the 2009 and 2010 Yale Tango Festival received rave reviews and left over a hundred inspired dancers in their wake. In November 2011, Mari’s very successful Boston workshop brought the local tango community face to face with a live tango orchestra and explored the many variables at play between live musicians and lively dancers. Mari believes that “we can only dance what we can hear,” so her goal is to help dancers improve their listening skills and find a deeper understanding of the rich layers and moods of tango music. Mari developed her love for tango as a student at Yale, and is now known on and off the dance floor as a multi-style violinist and teacher dedicated to bridging the gap between the musician, dancer, and storyteller. On the violin, she is a champion Celtic and Canadian fiddler, international prize-winning classical soloist, avid jazz player, and accomplished composer. In the tango world, you may have seen her as the violin soloist with the Monster Orchestra at the last Tango de los Muertos, or leading the All-Star Orchestra in workshop at the 2010 Yale Tango Festival. Most recently, her new Boston-based tango orchestra, Orquesta Sin Trabajo, has been delighting local dancers with their bold arrangements and great musical humor in their special appearances. Among her many other projects, Mari is dedicated to developing her “Not Another Musicality” curriculum, and will be starting regular class series in the Boston community in the spring.
